Bunny Chow is a Durban street food icon — a hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with rich, spicy curry. Born from the Indian community in KwaZulu-Natal, it's now beloved across South Africa.

  1. Heat oil in a pot. Fry onions until golden.
  2. Add garlic, ginger, curry leaves, and curry powder. Cook for 2 minutes.
  3. Add diced chicken and brown on all sides.
  4. Add tomatoes, potatoes, and 1 cup water. Season with salt and sugar.
  5. Simmer for 30-35 minutes until chicken is cooked and potatoes are tender.
  6. Stir in fresh coriander.
  7. Cut a round loaf of bread in half. Hollow out the center.
  8. Fill the bread bowl with the curry.
  9. Serve immediately with the bread pieces for dipping.
